Video scalers (also known as "video processors") are electronic devices or software functions that convert a video signal from one resolution to another. Their main function is to ensure that the input video signal is compatible with the native resolution of the output display, optimizing image quality for that device.

What Are Video Scalers?

Essentially, a video scaler takes an image with a specific number of pixels (for example, 1920x1080p Full HD) and transforms it to fit a display with a different number of pixels (for example, a 3840x2160p 4K UHD screen). This involves complex image processing, which may include:
 

      • Pixel Resizing: Adding or removing pixels to adapt to the new resolution.
      • De-interlacing: Converting interlaced signals (like 1080i) to progressive (1080p) for smoother viewing on modern displays.
      • Noise Reduction: Improving image quality by eliminating artifacts or noise from the original signal.
      • Sharpness and Detail Enhancement: Applying algorithms to make the image clearer and more defined.
      • Color and Brightness Correction: Adjusting image parameters for optimal reproduction.
      • Aspect Ratio Conversion: Adjusting the image to fit the screen's aspect ratio without distortion (for example, converting 4:3 to 16:9).
 

Scalers can be dedicated hardware devices (external or integrated into equipment such as projectors, televisions, or video switchers) or software solutions (such as scaling algorithms in media players or video editing programs).
 

What Are They Used For?

Video scalers are fundamental tools in a wide variety of professional and consumer audiovisual applications:

      1. Resolution Compatibility: This is the most basic and common use. They allow a video source of one resolution (e.g., a 480p DVD player) to be displayed correctly on a higher-resolution screen (e.g., a 4K TV) and vice versa. Without scaling, the image might look pixelated, have black bars, or not appear at all.
      2. LED Screens and Videowalls: In events, concerts, outdoor advertising, etc., LED screens have very specific and often non-standard resolutions. Scalers are indispensable for adapting any video source to the native resolution of the videowall, ensuring the image fills the screen without distortion and with the best possible quality. Many videowall processors integrate scaling functions.
      3. Large Format Projections: Similar to videowalls, high-end projectors and large format projection systems (mapping, etc.) require a video signal with the exact resolution to maximize image quality.
      4. Broadcast and Video Production:
          • Format Conversion: In television studios, post-production, and mobile units, it is common to work with equipment operating at different resolutions or frame rates. Scalers allow for clean conversion between HD, Full HD, 4K, and different standards (PAL/NTSC).
          • Video Switchers: Many professional video switchers integrate scalers on their inputs to homogenize signals from different sources before switching.
          • Remote Production (REMI): By integrating video sources from different locations and qualities, scalers ensure that all signals reach the production center with the appropriate resolution.
      5. Presentations and Conferences: They ensure that presentations from different laptops or video sources are displayed correctly on projectors and screens, regardless of their original output resolution.
      6. Home Cinema Systems: They enhance the quality of lower-resolution sources (DVD, old Blu-ray) on modern 4K TVs, using advanced scaling algorithms (upscaling).
      7. Gaming: Some gamers use external scalers to improve the visual quality of old games on modern screens or to adapt console signals to specific monitors.

How to Choose the Most Suitable One for Each Application?

Choosing the right video scaler involves considering several key factors:

Required Input and Output Resolutions:
    • What input resolutions do you need to support? (E.g., 480p, 720p, 1080i/p, 4K).
    • What is the native resolution of your screen/projector/videowall? (E.g., 1080p, 4K UHD, specific LED resolutions).
    • Ensure the scaler can handle both resolution ranges.
       
Types of Video Inputs and Outputs:
    • Connectivity: Do you need HDMI, SDI, DVI, DisplayPort, VGA, Composite?
    • Some scalers are HDMI-only, others are more versatile. For professional environments, SDI is common.
       
Scaling Quality (Algorithms):
    • This is a crucial factor. More advanced scalers use complex algorithms (e.g., Lanczos, Bicubic, Super-resolution AI-based) for better de-interlacing, noise reduction, and sharpness enhancement, resulting in a much cleaner and more detailed final image.
    • For critical applications (broadcast, cinema), look for scalers with high-end processors.
    • Some TVs and players include basic scalers, but dedicated ones usually offer better performance.
       
Latency
    • For real-time applications (live events, gaming, broadcast), latency (the delay the scaler introduces into the signal) is critical. Look for scalers with **"low latency"** or **"zero latency"**.
    • In applications where time is not a critical factor (home cinema, recorded video playback), latency may be less of a concern.
       
Additional Features:
    • Multi-input and Switching: Do you need the scaler to also function as a video switcher, allowing you to alternate between multiple input sources?
    • Multiview/PIP (Picture-in-Picture) Capabilities: Some advanced scalers allow displaying multiple sources on the same screen.
    • Audio Control: Does it also manage audio? Does it allow audio embedding/de-embedding?
    • Aspect Ratio Control: Options to force a specific aspect ratio or adjust automatically.
    • Rotation Capabilities: For screens used in vertical orientation.
    • EDID Management: To ensure fluid communication between the source and the display.
    • Remote Control: Does it have a web interface, RS-232, IP for control?
         
Budget:
    • Scalers vary enormously in price, from consumer devices under 100€ to professional solutions costing thousands of euros. Define your budget based on the criticality of the application and the required quality.

Integration and Ease of Use
    • Is it a "plug-and-play" device or does it require complex configuration? How does it integrate into your existing AV system?

By evaluating these points, you can determine whether you need a simple resolution converter, a multi-function video processor for a videowall, or a high-end broadcast scaler for your live production.
