AJA FS-HDR - HDR/WCG Converter with Colorfront Engine

AJA-FS-HDR

The AJA FS-HDR frame converter/synchroniser processes HDR (High Dynamic Range) and WCG (Wide Colour Gamut) video. Colorfront algorithms deliver real-time colour fidelity and minimal latency in UHD/4K and HD/2K workflows. FS-HDR works as a single-channel 4K converter or 4-channel HD/2K, with HDR, scaling, colour correction and deinterlacing capabilities.

The 4.0 update offers improved colour correction. It includes inflection point and slope control to improve highlights and clipping in SDR and HDR conversion, helps maintain SDR colour fidelity, improves HDR to SDR downscaling and SDR to HDR upscaling. It introduces BBC 3D HLG LUTs v1.4, an HLG to SDR LUT 9 and supports metadata for additional cameras and lenses. ARRI Log C, Canon Log 2/3, Panasonic V-Log, RED Log3G10/Wide Gamut and Sony S-Gamut3/S-Log3 colour spaces are accurately reproduced at HDR or SDR output.

Real-time HDR/WCG converter with Colorfront Engine video processing. It also performs the Up/Down conversion to 4K/UltraHD/2K/HD HDR. Designed for 1RU rackmount, the FS-HDR is a universal-frame converter/synchronizer, specifically designed to meet the needs of HDR (high dynamic range) and WCG (large color gamut) in broadcast AV, OTT, post-production and live event environments where real-time, low latency processing and color fidelity for 4K/UltraHD and 2K/HD workflows are required. Developed in partnership with Colorfront, the FS-HDR/WCG functionality works thanks to Colorfront Engine's proprietary video processing algorithms.

The FS-HDR also serves as a complete 1-Channel cross-converter for the needs of transforming, converting and synchronizing 4K/UltraHD/2K/HD HDR and in 4-Channel mode, offers 4 independent 2K/HD conversion channels including HDR conversions.

Real-time HDR converter

The search for High Dynamic Range (HDR) is the dream of approaching the Human Visual System (HVS) in everything we experience as spectators. The FS-HDR is designed to get us all there faster with a low-profile, stand-alone, real-time device designed exclusively to convert SDR into HDR, HDR into SDR and HDR into HDR, all in real time.

HDR Conversions:

  • HDR to HDR
  • HDR to SDR
  • SDR to HDR

WCG Conversions:

  • BT.709 and BT.2020

Up and Down Conversions:

  • Converting HD SDR BT.709 sources to UHD HDR BT.2020
  • Converting UHD HDR BT.2020 sources to HD SDR BT.709

Colorfront Engine

FS-HDR's HDR/WCG capabilities leverage the video processing algorithms and color space within Colorfront Engine, specially licensed by AJA of Colorfront, and developed by CTO Bill Feighter of Colorfront and Lead Engineer Tamas Perlaki, both Academy Award winners.

Thanks to the Colorfront Engine engine, FS-HDR's extensive HDR and WCG processing support enables real-time processing of a single 4K/UltraHD/2K/HD channel, including downstream conversion to HD HDR or up to four 2K/HD channels simultaneously.  FS-HDR also enables the conversion of popular multi-vendor camera formats into HDR space, in addition to the conversion of BT. 2020/BT. 709 as required, critical to the widespread acceptance of HDR along with SDR in broadcast and OTT workflows.

Realtime Camera LOG Conversions

FS-HDR can take input images from some of the world's most popular professional cameras today and convert your real-time LOG output to 4K/UltraHD or 2K/HD and output as HDR or SDR. This greatly simplifies workflows in a mixed camera environment and provides unified input workflow to HDR or SDR-compatible switches and more. In addition, FS-HDR provides the ability to convert Sony S-Gamut/S-Log3 to output from any of these sources for workflows that require this log feed to compatible switches and more.

Massive Audio Flexibility

The growth of 5.1 and 7.1 audio has increased the number of audio channels that need to be managed in one production, the MADI standard provides a convenient way to transport a large number of audio channels along a single cable, simplifying wiring demands for broadcasters, mobile trucks and production. FS-HDR supports both fiber and MADI coaxial input and output.  An internal 277x208 mono audio array enables routing from 1 to 1 or 1 to many with full MADI routing, mixdowns and all audio from SDI, fiber and AES sources for an incredible amount of audio processing capacity in a single box.

Closed Caption Conversion

Active Format Description (AFD)

Automatically adjusts the Active Format Description (AFD) information to match the converted signal. This means that AFD information does not have to be inserted after conversion and provides accurate information for devices that understand AFD.

Remote Configuration and Control

FS-HDR is network ready and supports SNMP monitoring and web-based remote control. The units can connect to any Ethernet network via the built-in 10/100/1000MB Ethernet port, allowing control and configuration of multiple FS units from any web browser on a connected computer. Configurations can be saved and applied to multiple units, ensuring consistency and quick setup in large installations.

To integrate seamlessly with the existing automation of an installation, the FS-HDR can also receive external GPI commands to enable a variety of functions.
