It also simultaneously records proxy files in H.264 and 12-bit Blackmagic RAW format.

Designed for extreme flexibility

A variety of mounting holes and accessory brackets make it easy to adapt the PYXIS 6K to the needs of any project. The CNC-machined aircraft aluminum frame provides superior strength without adding weight, making it easy to mount to cranes, stabilizers or drones. In addition to 6.35mm (1/4") and 9.50mm (3/8") threaded holes on the top and bottom, this model offers multiple side mounts that allow you to add accessories such as grips, microphones or even SSD drives. This makes it a reliable and rugged camera for all types of productions.

Hollywood image quality

The Blackmagic PYXIS model has the professional tools you need to shoot feature films, TV shows and documentaries, while allowing you to create cinematic-looking content for social media and platforms like YouTube. At the same time, it offers the same features as the most expensive digital cinema cameras, allowing you to capture richer colors, more detail, and a wider dynamic range between highlights and shadows. This is why feature films have such incredible aesthetics, and it is now possible to achieve them in any type of project, even low-budget independent films, TV commercials or corporate audiovisual materials.

Large Digital Cinema Sensor

The Blackmagic PYXIS features a full frame sensor that allows you to shoot at a resolution of 6048x4032, nearly three times the resolution of a Super35 sensor, giving you the ability to shoot with a shallow depth of field or use anamorphic lenses that utilize the full sensor area to achieve a cinematic look. When shooting in daylight or near-dark conditions, the 13-stop dynamic range and maximum dual native ISO of up to 25600 provide superb, low-noise images in a variety of lighting conditions. In addition, the PYXSIS offers the ability to shoot at 36 fps with the full sensor or 120 fps by reducing the usable sensor area, and combined with Blackmagic Colorimetry, it offers the same technology as the most expensive cinema cameras.

Format flexibility

The full-frame sensor in this model offers the ability to work with a wide range of film formats and aspect ratios without sacrificing quality. By taking advantage of the entire sensor, an image is captured in a 3:2 aspect ratio, allowing shots to be resized in post-production. This makes it possible to work in 6:5 anamorphic format without cropping, providing more detail and unprecedented resolution. Using the classic dimensions of a Super 35 sensor, you get a close-up of the shot that fits perfectly with the rest of the material shot with the full sensor. The result is outstanding cinematic images of exceptional quality.

Three exceptional models

The three PYXIS versions available allow the widest range of L, EF or PL lenses to be used for cinematography or photography.

The L-mount version allows the use of the latest full-frame models from Leica, Panasonic and Sigma, while offering compatibility with a wide range of new and classic lenses through the use of adapters.

The EF-mount version supports photographic lenses from DSLRs or even Pocket Cinema Camera models, while the PL version offers the ability to work with professional lenses from manufacturers such as Zeiss, ARRI and Cooke without the need for an adapter. With the Blackmagic PYXIS model, there are no limits to the creative possibilities.

Amazing images with high dynamic range

The difference between the brightest and darkest parts of an image is called dynamic range and is measured in steps. In the case of the Blackmagic PYXIS model, this value is 13 steps, allowing more detail to be preserved in the highlights and shadows of an image than is possible with ordinary camcorders. This makes it possible to set the exposure for an indoor scene, such as a coffee shop, and still perfectly capture what you see outside through the window. In addition, more colors are obtained than with the DCI-P3 space used in film. DaVinci Resolve Studio, included with the camera, offers complete creative freedom with controls for adjusting exposure and recovering detail during color grading.

Exceptional Low Light Performance

In digital cinematography, ISO measures the sensitivity of the sensor to light. The higher the number, the higher the sensitivity, allowing you to shoot in natural light or even at night. As such, the Blackmagic PYXIS offers a dual native ISO of 25600 and has been optimized to minimize grain or noise in images while preserving the dynamic range of the sensor. A value of 400 is ideal for scenes shot in studios with artificial lighting, while the secondary value of 3200 is recommended for shooting in low light conditions. The gain is automatically determined when the ISO value is set in the camera, making it easy to capture exceptional images when there is no time to set up lighting.

Multiple resolutions and frame rates

The PYXIS can record in all common resolutions and frame rates, even at 24.6 megapixels. It supports frame rates up to 36 fps at 6048x4032 with the full sensor or 60 fps at 6048x2520 (2.4:1) and 60 fps at 4096x2160 in DCI 4K format. Using higher values, it is possible to reduce the usable sensor area and shoot at 100f/s in Super16 format (2112x1184) or even in 6:5 anamorphic format with definitions much higher than those of other cameras, using compatible lenses in 4.8K (4832x4032) resolution at 24f/s. It can also record at 120 fps in HD 1080 resolution. This camera offers a wide range of resolutions for all types of projects.

4-inch LCD monitor

The Blackmagic PYXIS touchscreen LCD monitor is ideal for on-set image monitoring due to its size and compatibility with high dynamic range footage. Its resolution allows framing and focusing without the need for large external monitors. In addition, its 1500 nits brightness makes it easy to view shots or change settings even in bright sunlight. The display also shows device and shooting status, histogram, audio level, framing guides, and other information superimposed on the image. Three-dimensional conversion tables (LUTs) can also be quickly applied to quickly determine the desired look and feel.

All controls at your fingertips

The Blackmagic PYXIS has a logical design that simplifies access to essential functions such as ISO sensitivity, white balance and shutter. It includes a small wheel for quick setting changes and three programmable buttons that simplify access to different functions without having to search through each menu. The record and playback buttons are positioned for easy access, and there are dedicated controls for higher frame rates, focus, and false color, among others. Note that these controls can be locked to prevent accidental changes to settings during recording or when the camera is out of range.

Mounting options with side mounts

The innovative PYXIS side mounts provide greater flexibility in adapting the camera to different jobs. The included bracket is made from the same aircraft-grade aluminum as the frame and features two 6.35mm (1/4") and one 9.50mm (3/8") threaded holes for adding microphones and other accessories. This model also comes with an SSD mount that provides a secure place to mount USB-C drives or even cell phones for live streaming over the Internet. The optional rosette has five 6.35mm and four 9.50mm threaded holes to facilitate the use of additional accessories, as well as a mounting point for adding handles or outriggers.

Ideal formats for post-production

As well as shooting in Blackmagic RAW format to preserve detail and control exposure and color in post-production, the PYXIS also records HD resolution H.264 proxy files that can be easily shared on the fly. Blackmagic RAW is a format optimized for multi-core CPUs running multiple processes simultaneously, streamlined through the GPU for compatibility with platforms such as Metal, CUDA and OpenCL. The result is unprecedented resolution and quality for color grading, overlays, compositing, resizing, stabilization and tracking in HD, 4K and 6K. Files can be opened on any operating platform, and recording media is formatted using HFS+ (Mac) or ExFAT (Windows).

Capture to CFexpress cards or external drives

The Blackmagic PYXIS includes a USB-C expansion port for direct recording to external flash drives or SSDs, as well as two CFexpress card slots. Much more durable and faster than older storage media, CFexpress cards are ideal for recording 12-bit Blackmagic RAW files at high resolution. It is possible to shoot for over an hour at 6K resolution on a single 256GB card. It is also worth noting that these bays allow you to continue shooting without having to pause to change the storage device. Because of their speed, CFexpress cards can be inserted into any computer for instant editing using the DaVinci Resolve Studio software included with the camera.

Blackmagic Operating System

This advanced operating system is very intuitive and easy to use. It has a modern structure where all camera functions work independently for ease of use, and allows the unit to boot up without delay. It has the same controls and menus as other Blackmagic cameras, so you can easily switch between different models. To configure settings, add metadata or view recording status, simply tap or swipe the screen. You can also control focus and exposure tools, conversion tables, dynamic range, metadata, timecode and RAW settings.

5th Generation Colorimetry

Featuring the same 5th Generation Colorimetry as the URSA Cine, this camera delivers enhanced image quality with incredibly accurate skin tones and true colors in every shot. In addition, its innovative 12-bit dynamic tone curve allows more information to be captured in highlights and shadows. Colorimetry performs some of the complex processing of Blackmagic RAW images, so the metadata preserves the color and dynamic range information captured by the sensor for use in post-production. This results in a natural, cinematic look when making color adjustments in DaVinci Resolve Studio.

4G or 5G cellular connection

When uploading files to Blackmagic Cloud, it is possible to use an iPhone or Android phone to connect to the internet using mobile data through the camera's USB-C port. This feature supports 4G or 5G phones, and it is also possible to connect to an Ethernet network. This allows images to be transferred as soon as they are captured, so the production team can get to work immediately from anywhere in the world. Color grading can also be done from a color grading room and the footage can be synchronized with DaVinci Resolve. The result is a global post-production solution that is compatible with the Blackmagic Cloud and helps build exceptional creative teams.

Compatibility with URSA Cine Viewfinders and other accessories

Blackmagic PYXIS allows you to connect an optional electronic viewfinder to facilitate both location and handheld shooting. This accessory includes a high quality 1920x1080 resolution OLED display, a built-in proximity sensor and a four element glass diopter with wide focus adjustment for greater precision. It also features a digital setting chart that allows you to configure the unit for optimum performance. In addition, the display allows you to view critical information such as framing guides. Adding the viewfinder to the camera is extremely easy as it attaches to the included extension arm and connects to the unit via a USB-C cable. It can be positioned in a variety of ways and has two types of eyepieces.

Professional Connections

The Blackmagic PYXIS offers a wide variety of connections for audio devices, monitors and power supplies. For example, it includes a 12G SDI output, which transmits UHD images with wide dynamic range and also allows you to connect monitors to monitor recorded material and view critical camera data. The SDI connections provide the possibility of using longer cables, facilitating the use of units that are further away. In addition, this model has a 48V mini-XLR connection, with phantom power mode for microphones and a 3.5mm input for camcorder-like versions, as well as inputs for timecode and reference signals, a headphone port and a DC power connector with locking mechanism.

Built-in microphones and professional audio inputs

Thanks to the ability to record high-fidelity audio with this camera, there is no need for additional recorders. The Blackmagic PYXIS has a 48V mini-XLR input with phantom power mode that allows different types of microphones to be connected. The built-in microphones have an extremely low noise floor and are resistant to shock and wind, providing the opportunity to capture both sound and reference tracks with exceptional clarity during filming. Also included is a 3.5 mm audio input for camcorder-like microphones, a headphone input and a speaker. These connections allow two independent audio tracks to be recorded via the microphones, without the need for external mixing consoles.

Live streaming via SRT and RTMP protocols

It is now possible to broadcast live from the location. The Blackmagic PYXIS model has a built-in streaming engine that supports RTMP and SRT protocols, allowing you to stream to platforms such as YouTube, Facebook and X. There are two ways to access the Internet: via an Ethernet adapter or by connecting a 4G or 5G phone to use mobile data. The camera's viewfinder and display show the connection status and transfer rate. The signal can also be sent to a Blackmagic ATEM Streaming Bridge for a wireless connection to the studio. This H.264 decoder allows an SDI signal to be output again. This keeps the entire production team up to date on what's happening during the shoot.
