RED KOMODO 6K Digital Cinema Camera (Canon RF)

With the launch of the KOMODO 6K, RED has taken a revolutionary step by bringing its legendary image quality and color science to an ultra-compact, all-in-one design that is only 1/2 kg and 10 x 10 x 10cm in size. One of the keys to achieving this goal has been the use of the Canon RF lens mount and the 19.9 MP Super35 CMOS sensor, which features Global Shutter technology. This sensor can capture images with a dynamic range of more than 16 stops and removes rolling shutter artifacts. Users can be confident that they are getting RED quality, thanks to the ability to record up to 6K at 40fps, 5K at 48fps, 4K at 60fps and 2K at 120fps using the REDCODE RAW encoder, which offers incredible flexibility in post production. The KOMODO Beta v.1.5.0 firmware update adds support for 6K anamorphic formats, 4-channel audio, FTPS for file transfer, support for the Canon RF lens control ring, and much more. It also adds the 512GB and 1TB ExAscend CFast cards to the list of approved media.

Compact and extremely versatile

Innovative for RED is the creation of a digital movie camera with an extremely compact, all-in-one design. This means that you simply insert a CFast 2.0 card into its slot and it is ready to record with data rates of up to 280MB/s.

Multiple ways to control the Komodo

A 2.9" 1440x1440px touchscreen makes it easy to set up and monitor recordings, or you can use the RED Control system to use an iOS or Android device for preview and adjustments. This is made possible by the integrated 2.4/5GHz Wi-Fi. Wired control is also possible via the USB Type-C port and from optional adapters.

Canon RF mount

The use of the Canon RF lens mount allows the KOMODO to be extremely compact while enabling compatibility with a wide range of lenses through the use of optional adapters. The mount natively supports both mechanical RF and mechanical EF lenses via the included adapter. By using optional EF to RF mount adapters, the KOMODO will even support Canon EF mount electronic lenses and unlock additional functions such as autofocus.

FDAF Autofocus

A first for RED is the ability to use Phase Detection Auto Focus (PDAF) with compatible lenses. This includes the Canon EF-mount adapted lenses, which are used with a separately available EF-to-RF adapter with electronic communication. Phase detection systems are known for their speed in measuring and comparing distance and provide a reliable and accurate system for video production. In addition, the touch screen can be used to quickly change focus and select subjects.

REDCODE RAW and Apple ProRes codecs

In terms of image quality, the KOMODO is among the best in RED, with the ability to capture up to 6K at 40fps using the powerful 16-bit REDCODE RAW format. RED has simplified the compression options, giving users a choice of HQ, MQ and LQ, each of which varies compression from low to high, respectively. Users can choose the best option for each shoot and prioritize data rate or image quality. REDCODE RAW supports 5K up to 48fps, 4K up to 60fps and 2K up to 120fps, and offers the greatest possible flexibility in post-production. Those wishing to use a more common format can record natively in Apple ProRes 422 HQ and 422 standard with DCI 4K up to 60fps or DCI 2K up to 120fps.

All the connections you need

As a complete all-in-one camera solution, the KOMODO has all the necessary ports and connections. This includes integrated stereo microphones and a 3.5mm input for audio, genlock / timecode / GPIO / RS232 support via a 9-pin EXT port, and a DC power input. A 12G-SDI port will support up to DCI 4K at 60fps in 10bit 4:2:2 quality, for dedicated monitoring solutions. The rear of the camera also features two hot-swappable Canon BP-9xx series battery slots for virtually unlimited recording in the field.

The RED KOMODO 6K offers an exceptionally compact form factor that sacrifices nothing in terms of image quality. This basic version includes the KOMODO 6K, a 45W AC power adapter, a mini world travel adapter kit and a Canon RF to EF mechanical adapter.
