Key Functionality and Encoding

This device acts as a high-performance streaming processor. It incorporates hardware encoding engines for H.264 and H.265, allowing video transmission in HD and Ultra HD resolutions, including 2160p60. H.265 encoding is particularly useful for achieving Ultra HD streams with efficient bitrates. It supports the most commonly used professional transmission protocols, such as SRT (Secure Reliable Transport) and RTMP (Real-Time Messaging Protocol), ensuring compatibility with a wide range of destination platforms like YouTube, Facebook, X, and Blackmagic Cloud.

Connections and Video Formats

It features a main 12G-SDI input, capable of handling video formats in SD, HD (up to 1080p60), 2K DCI, Ultra HD (up to 2160p60), and 4K DCI (up to 60p). The 12G-SDI input includes integrated standards conversion (based on Teranex technology) to automatically adapt the incoming video signal to the configured streaming format. It includes a 12G-SDI loop output that allows passing the input signal to other equipment without delay. For monitoring, it offers one SDI and one HDMI output, both configurable to display the processed video.

Embedded Audio

It manages embedded audio directly within the video signals. It supports 16 channels of embedded audio on the SDI input and loop output, which is fundamental in broadcast and professional production environments. The HDMI monitoring output includes 2 channels of embedded audio.

Network and USB Connectivity

Internet connection for streaming and configuration is made via an Ethernet port supporting 10/100/1000 Base-T speeds. This allows for a reliable wired network connection. Additionally, it has a rear USB-C port that functions as a high-resolution webcam output (up to 2160p60), facilitating its use with videoconferencing software or PC/Mac-based streaming applications. This USB-C port can also be used to connect a mobile phone and leverage 4G or 5G networks as an internet connection method, offering flexibility in remote locations. An additional USB-C port on the front is used for control and configuration.

Streaming and Protocols

It allows direct streaming to various platforms using RTMP and SRT. The implementation of SRT provides a more robust and reliable transmission over unstable networks. A notable feature is the ability to create point-to-point transmission links with the Blackmagic Streaming Decoder 4K, allowing coded video to be sent securely between remote locations and decoded back to SDI/HDMI.

Control and Monitoring

Device control can be performed in several ways. It includes a front panel with a 2.2-inch color LCD screen displaying video, audio meters, and streaming status. Buttons and a dial allow for quick menu navigation and setting adjustments. Remote control is possible via the front USB-C connection or the Ethernet port. For more advanced integrations, it features a REST API over Ethernet, allowing control from external automation systems via HTTP. It offers technical monitoring on the monitor output to display relevant information about the incoming SDI signal and detect potential issues.

Additional Features

It supports the insertion of CEA-608 and CEA-708 closed captions in RTMP streams. It is capable of transmitting source Timecode via the RTMP and SRT protocols. Furthermore, it supports remote control functionalities for compatible Blackmagic Design cameras, Tally, and Talkback, facilitating communication in remote multi-camera productions, especially in combination with the Blackmagic Streaming Decoder.

Physical Specifications and Power

It features a compact one-third rack unit (⅓ RU) design, allowing up to three units to be installed in a standard 1U rack space using an optional shelf. It has an internal power supply compatible with 100-240V AC voltages. It also includes a 12V DC power input via a 4-pin XLR connector, ideal for power redundancy or battery operation outdoors. Maximum power consumption is approximately 25W.
