This decoder integrates talkback, camera control, and tally functionalities. Additionally, the change in nomenclature of the Blackmagic Web Presenter is announced, which will now be called the Blackmagic Streaming Encoder, facilitating the identification of a coherent line of streaming encoders and decoders. Together, these two products enable the establishment of high-quality global video links with broadcast quality in HD and Ultra HD.

Main Functionality of the Decoder

The Blackmagic Streaming Decoder 4K is a streaming processor that allows users to establish IP transmission links with the Blackmagic Streaming Encoder. The Blackmagic Streaming Decoder 4K receives H.264 or H.265 streams from the Blackmagic Streaming Encoder and decodes them into SDI (up to 12G-SDI) and HDMI video signals. It is worth noting that most Blackmagic Design cameras, including the Blackmagic Studio Camera Pro, PYXIS, URSA Cine, and URSA Broadcast G2 models, integrate direct streaming capabilities, eliminating the need for additional hardware for point-to-point transmission between remote locations. The Blackmagic Streaming Decoder also incorporates a 12G-SDI reference input that allows for the connection of SDI tally, camera control signals, and intercom, and their return routing to the encoder. This facilitates remote collaboration between different locations.

Network Connectivity

For maximum flexibility, users can establish an internet connection via mobile data using their phones, ideal for transmissions from remote locations or as redundancy for the main Ethernet connection. For added versatility, both the front and rear panels incorporate USB-C ports that support the connection of mobile data modems. The device is compatible with the latest high-speed mobile phone standards, including 5G and 4G. In the event of a main connection failure, the Blackmagic Streaming Decoder automatically switches to the mobile data connection via the connected phone. Users can also define the connection priority, selecting between Ethernet or the phone connection.

Control, Intercom, and Tally

Most Blackmagic Design cameras support remote control, intercom, and tally signals via ATEM switchers using a control protocol embedded in the SDI signal. The control is integrated directly into all cameras and transmitted through the ATEM's SDI outputs. The camera number can be selected directly in the camera's interface. This functionality also extends to cameras with integrated streaming capabilities. To enable these features, the reference (REF) input of the Blackmagic Streaming Decoder must be connected to an SDI output of the ATEM switcher that transmits the control information. For cameras without integrated streaming capabilities, the Blackmagic Streaming Encoder can be used as the transmission source. The control signal is output through the Streaming Encoder's SDI monitoring output, which should be connected to the SDI input of the compatible Blackmagic camera.

Design and Mounting

Both the Blackmagic Streaming Encoder and the Blackmagic Streaming Decoder share the modular Teranex Mini design, facilitating their installation in standard racks. Their compact design, with a width of 14 cm, allows for the installation of up to three contiguous units in a single rack space (1RU), optimizing density for simultaneous streaming configurations to multiple destinations.
