Blackmagic Design HyperDeck Extreme 4K combines the reliability of the HyperDeck line with innovations such as H.265 compression, optional internal cache, three-dimensional conversion tables and support for high dynamic range HDR content. By recording images in H.265 format at 4K resolution, less storage space is required and outstanding quality is achieved. The large front touchscreen display allows you to view recorded footage clearly and also control the device. By adding a HyperDeck Extreme Control unit, it is also possible to turn it into a traditional professional recorder. It is ideal for Broadcasters, live productions and cutting-edge digital signage.

Modern design with traditional controls

HyperDeck Extreme 4K features an innovative touchscreen display that allows you to control and view recorded material. The HyperDeck Extreme Control panel is an accessory that offers traditional professional controls and a convenient rotary knob. Both devices can be rack-mounted. The recorder also includes two memory card slots, 12G SDI technology, USB-C port for external drives, a front speaker, a headphone connection and several other analogue connections. Cache memory (optional) prevents frames from being skipped if the storage unit is too slow or becomes full. The device supports both DC and AC power for use in studios or on location.

Unmatched Versatility

The HyperDeck Extreme line of devices is ideal for mastering, playing back clips or recording isolated signals during live productions. Analogue inputs allow old tapes to be digitised for editing or web streaming across multiple platforms. The 10G Ethernet connectivity and simple remote control protocol makes it easy to create digital posters in 4K resolution. Outdoor recording is also possible thanks to the various input types, LUT conversion tables and built-in indicators, which provide the ability to check the quality of content for compliance with broadcast standards before transmission.

Internet broadcasting

Due to the popularity of webcasting services, it is increasingly important to preserve diversity through local programmes. The solution is to broadcast them over such services at a reasonable cost. To this end, the HyperDeck Extreme Control device allows older professional recorders to be connected and the footage edited. When combined with HyperDeck Extreme units, you can do all of this with a single operator, and even convert tapes easily using Blackmagic Teranex Express processors. In addition, these models can control a wide variety of recording devices, such as one-inch C-Movies, Betacam SP and digital units.

Large, bright touch screen

The device's innovative interface provides full control, with buttons to record and start/stop playback and a reduced timeline that allows you to scroll through images by swiping your finger across the screen. The screen displays audio level, timecode, signal format and storage unit status. It also allows you to view graphical indicators, activate focus and exposure assistants, modify various settings and load or save LUT conversion tables. The video recorder also has buttons for remote control activation and remote control enablement, as well as direct playback controls. It is also possible to connect a HyperDeck Extreme Control unit, which includes traditional controls.

Traditional controls

The HyperDeck Extreme Control panel is an optional accessory, with a familiar design, offering controls that work in the traditional way. It can control up to eight recording units via RS-422 connections and can be placed in a rack next to the HyperDeck Extreme 4K or HyperDeck Extreme 8K. Due to the type of connections included, it provides the ability to control older devices and edit from the input and output points, which is ideal for digitising footage, even at different frame rates when converting formats. The controls have been developed by Blackmagic Design to provide traditional styling with unparalleled quality.

Uninterrupted recording on CFast cards

This device offers the possibility to record on commercially available CFast cards. Because H.265 files are smaller, more content can be stored. The two slots on this model make it easy to replace the cards when their capacity runs out, even during recording, to avoid interruptions. These storage media offer high speed at an economical price. It is even possible to connect a Blackmagic MultiDock 10G device to use SSDs. In addition, the H.265 compression system allows you to record 3350 minutes in UHD 2160p60 or 9446 minutes in 1080p59.94 on a 1TB card. This is equivalent to more than 50 hours in 4K resolution or more than 6 days in HD definition.

Recording to external drives

The USB-C port allows large capacity external drives to be connected, as there are no space limitations. The same drive can also be used for recording and editing, so there is no need to spend time copying files before starting post-production. Because these storage media are extremely fast, they support formats whose data transfer rate is too high for a CFast card, such as ProRes in 4K resolution. The Blackmagic MultiDock 10G also offers the opportunity to record to SSD drives, and the recorder's on-screen menus make it easy to manage external drives.

Optional cache memory for no skipped frames

Sometimes frames can be skipped if the memory card is too slow or is full before it is replaced by an empty one. To avoid this problem, it is possible to install a flash drive, with PCIe connection, in the device, to be used as a cache memory. In this way, the flash drive will automatically record the content not captured by the CFast card or external disk. Even if these become full, recording will continue in the cache memory until they are replaced. This also allows recording in formats whose transfer rate is too high for the storage medium. It is worth noting that a heatsink is included, so that the user can install the PCIe drive.

12G SDI, HDMI and analogue equipment support

HyperDeck Extreme 4K offers a wide variety of audio-visual connections and 12G SDI links, compatible with all definitions. These allow the alpha channel and main signal to be transmitted when playing back RGBA 4:4:4:4:4 files. In turn, the HDMI connection facilitates the use of common TVs and projectors. Connections for timecode and balanced analogue or hi-fi audio are included for digitising content. SDI output downscales images for monitoring on monitors. The USB-C port allows storage drives or disk arrays to be connected for recording, while 10G Ethernet technology facilitates the use of high-speed FTP protocols. These devices also feature 12V AC or DC (XLR) power connections.

HDR and wide colour gamut support

The device supports the latest HDR standards with its bright, wide colour gamut display. When working with High Dynamic Range content, the displays show the corresponding information, and the SDI and HDMI outputs automatically detect this signal. PQ and HLG static metadata formats are processed in accordance with the ST2084 standard. In addition, the wide colour gamut of the LCD display provides compatibility with Rec.2020 and Rec.709 spaces, and even supports DCI-P3 content.

Indicators to meet broadcast standards

For broadcast projects, HyperDeck Extreme offers the ability to monitor the signal to ensure compliance with broadcast standards. The waveform monitor shows the luminance level of the received or reproduced signal. The vectorscope displays the colour intensity at a 100% SDI reference level. The YUV and RGB graphs are ideal for establishing appropriate colour levels, while the histogram provides information about the distribution of highlights and shadows or loss of detail. These indicators can be overlaid on the picture, which is also displayed in a small window at the top right of the display.

12G SDI connectivity for any definition signals

HyperDeck Extreme 4K provides full compatibility with the most commonly used formats. The SDI and HDMI connections support multiple bitrates, so they are capable of processing SD (NTSC and PAL), HD 720 (720p50/59.94), HD 1080 (1080i50/59.94, 1080p23.98/24, 25, 29.97, 30, 50, 59.94, 60 and 1080 PsF), UHD (2160p59.94) and DCI (2K or 4K up to 25p) signals. Importantly, 3G SDI Level A or B signals are supported.

H.265 and ProRes files for greater compatibility

4K resolution contains four times as many pixels as HD. For this reason, HyperDeck Extreme 4K HDR records footage in H.265 files to make better use of storage space and facilitate processing. The files have a compression ratio of 60:1 to 285:1, so they are much smaller in size, and are compatible with all major operating systems. The device supports recording in ProRes 422 HQ, ProRes 422 and ProRes 422 LT, and playback in ProRes 4444, to transmit the alpha channel and the main signal. This supports the use of software such as DaVinci Resolve, Media Composer, Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro.

Multiple SDI and analogue audio channels

HyperDeck Extreme 4K allows professional audio processing, both when working for broadcasters and when digitising archive material for preservation. In SDI formats, it is possible to record 2, 4, 8 or 16 channels of audio in real time, while the 4 XLR inputs facilitate the capture of channels from Betacam SP units. Two metering modes (VU or PPM) are offered and indicated on the display. In addition, the device features direct hi-fi inputs for VCRs, set-top boxes and DVD players. Not only do these models feature advanced technology, but their analogue connections are also designed to the highest transmission specifications for noise and distortion.

Fast interconnection with 10G Ethernet technology

With 10G Ethernet technology, HyperDeck Extreme 4K is ideal for digital signage projects, providing the ability to transfer content at much faster speeds than a CFast card. Both versions use a simple, text-based protocol and control commands can be verified via Telnet. Simply type "play" or "record" and the computer will play or record the images, respectively. The FTP protocol allows media files to be uploaded remotely via one of several available clients. The recorder is also ideal as a broadcast server for ingest, organisation and playback of content when using these protocols with USB-C disk arrays.

RS-422 connection to control devices

Since the 1980s, the RS-422 connection has been the most widely used connection for professional recorders. Developed by Sony, it is present in almost all professional equipment. As such, HyperDeck Extreme models support a wide variety of protocols that allow them to be connected directly to various broadcast systems. They also support AMP (Advanced Media Protocol) commands to drive disk recorders. When designing RS-422 control solutions, 0xF0E0 (30/60p), 0xF1E0 (25/50p) or 0xF2E0 (24p) IDs indicate that the recorder is connected.

Compatible with mixers, controllers and converters

A wide variety of Blackmagic Design products are compatible with HyperDeck Extreme models. For example, the HyperDeck Extreme Control device includes traditional controls and uses the RS-422 protocol, which works with all types of professional recorders. In addition, the new Blackmagic MultiDock10G allows you to store media to SSD drives from any HyperDeck model. This equipment is also ideal for mastering content with ATEM Constellation 8K mixers or playback clips and record isolated signals. The Teranex SDI to HDMI 8K converter lets you monitor video on a television, and features a calibration system, on screen indicators and conversion tables.
