The Blackmagic Design HyperDeck Shuttle HD is a desktop recorder and player, with a large search knob that allows clips to be found quickly. It supports ProRes, DNx and H.264 files in NTSC, PAL, 720p and 1080p formats, while HDMI connections provide the opportunity to connect mixers, cameras and monitors. It uses SD or UHS-II cards and external USB-C drives to store and playback recorded material. The design of this device is the same as the ATEM Mini Extreme mixer, so they work together perfectly, and it even has a built-in teleprompter.
Professional video recorder with elegant design
The model is designed for desktop use and can be easily controlled. Its slight tilt allows the hand to rest on the search knob, and the buttons are easily accessible. It is also a perfect match for the ATEM Mini Extreme mixers, as the design is the same. The natural inertia of the seek knob allows for fast forward and rewind scrolling, and the soft rubber surface is pleasant to the touch. The buttons, on the other hand, are the same as on any traditional recorder. The rear panel includes all the necessary connections, including power and network connections.
Ideal for master recording and clip playback
The support for H.264, ProRes and DNx files allows you to record master copies and even select PCM or AAC audio. This is ideal for creating high quality copies when using ATEM Mini mixers. The device offers everything you need to send programmes to Broadcasters and stream them via YouTube.
The large rotary knob allows a visual search. When the desired clip is found, pressing the rewind button takes you to the beginning of the clip, while pressing CLIP stops playback at the end. The device can also be controlled from an ATEM mixer, via the Ethernet network.
Traditional controls
The Blackmagic HyperDeck Shuttle features an easy-to-use control panel. The buttons are the same as any traditional recorder, and when the record button is pressed, the source immediately begins recording to a file, according to the format selected by menu. In addition, the device includes other buttons to play a clip, rewind to the beginning of a clip or advance to the next clip. All controls have been designed by Blackmagic Design to the highest quality. The machined metal rotary knob simplifies image search, and can also be controlled remotely via an Ethernet network.
SD and UHS-II card support
The HyperDeck Shuttle can record on SD and UHS-II cards, so there is no need to invest in expensive storage media. The cards are ideal, as they offer high speed in a compact design and at an affordable price. It is also possible to connect external USB drives or a Blackmagic MultiDock device in order to record to multiple drives without interruption. H.264 files are small, giving you the opportunity to store a lot of material on inexpensive cards - for example, up to 157 hours of H.264 at 1080p59.94 on a 1TB card, or more than six days of HD footage.
Recording to USB-C external drives
The USB-C port allows you to connect external drives with larger capacities than other storage media. It is also possible to use the same drive for recording and editing, which saves time as there is no need to copy files before starting post-production. Simply connect the drive to a computer and you're ready to go. The Blackmagic MultiDock 10G offers four SSD bays and is compatible with the HyperDeck Shuttle model. External drives can be managed from the configuration menu.
ProRes, DNx and H.264 files
The HyperDeck Shuttle HD model supports the most common codecs, e.g. DNx and ProRes, or H.264 when recording in NTSC, PAL, 720p, 1080p and even 1080i. This enables compression ratios from 60:1 to 285:1 to achieve small files with high quality images. In addition, when uploading to YouTube, it is possible to choose the audio format (PCM or AAC). Furthermore, the device supports ExFAT and HFS+ formatted drives, allowing you to access your content on Mac and Windows computers. Long-duration events can be recorded to a single file.
Wide range of connections
Despite its compact design, the HyperDeck Shuttle has a wide range of connections. The HDMI input allows cameras and mixers to be connected, while the HDMI output allows monitors to be used for presentations or ATEM Mini units to play back content such as commercials, promotions or video clips. A 12V DC power input is provided on the rear panel, and the device includes a power supply. The 1G Ethernet connection offers the opportunity to remotely control the recorder and upload files, and the USB-C expansion port makes it easy to connect external drives and upgrade the device, which also supports SD and UHS-II cards.
HDMI connection for ATEM Mini mixers
With HDMI input and output, you can connect cameras, monitors, TVs, projectors and even ATEM Mini mixers. These connections support a wide variety of formats, both standard definition (NTSC and PAL) and high definition (720p50, 720p59.94, 1080i50, 1080i59.94, 1080p23.98, 1080p24, 1080p25, 1080p29.97, 1080p30, 1080p50, 1080p59.94, 1080p60 and even 1080PsF).
Integrated telepronpter
The HyperDeck Shuttle HD model can also be used as a telepronpter. Simply select this option in the recording menu, as the device processes common RTF text files. No special software is required, as the script can be written in any simple text editor, e.g. TextEdit. To switch from one script to another, simply press the forward or reverse buttons. By pressing the JOG and SCR buttons simultaneously, the text is scrolled in the same way as in a conventional telepronpter. It will retain the size and font of the original file, as well as the colour and alignment. When writing scripts with a 12-point font, the device will automatically adjust the size according to the connected monitor.
Network File Transfer
The Blackmagic HyperDeck Shuttle allows media files to be transferred via FTP clients. In this regard, the 1G Ethernet connection often offers faster speeds than SD cards. All devices use a simple text-based protocol, and it is possible to check control commands via Telnet. Simply type "play" or "record" and the device will play or record the images, respectively. By combining the control and file transfer protocols and connecting a HyperDeck recorder to a set of USB-C disks, you get an outstanding server for ingest, playback and organisation of media assets.
Blackmagic Operating System
The innovative Blackmagic OS operating system is designed for high-end professional and film products and provides access to the device's various functions. It provides instant power on, image recording, audio metering, timecode and other data, network configuration, media management and is available in multiple languages. Menus are superimposed on the image displayed on the monitor connected to the device and allow the device to be configured. The operating system also offers exceptional speed to ensure file transfer via the 1G Ethernet port.
Compatible with all software and broadcasting platforms
Blackmagic HyperDeck Shuttle HD records files that are compatible with almost all editing software. Using the H.264 format, these can be uploaded directly to streaming platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, Vimeo or Twitter. It is also possible to use popular applications such as DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro or Media Composer, as the file format is the same as that used in post-production, or even create visual effects in Fusion and After Effects. The recorder allows the use of formatted discs on computer hardware, making it easy to edit the material stored on them without the need to copy it.
