With recent technological advances, as well as increasingly affordable equipment, the transition to capturing and delivering content in 4K, and higher resolutions, has been rapid. The need for transmission speeds faster than Gigabit Ethernet to transfer all that data has accelerated just as quickly. For workgroups with shared storage in post-production, and other bandwidth-intensive workflows, 10Gb Ethernet is the new standard for data transfer. As adoption accelerates, many enterprises are opting for 10Gb fibre optic (SFP+) infrastructures, but the price of adding client connectivity remains a barrier for some. 

Sonnet's Solo 10G SFP+ external network card offers an affordable alternative for desktops and workstations to incorporate a 10G Ethernet over fibre port. This powerful and simple solution adds ultra-fast 10GBASE-SR 10GbE network connectivity to Mac, Windows and Linux computers. Installation is as simple as connecting the Solo10G adapter to the computer via the Thunderbolt port and to the network switch (or directly to 10GbE-enabled storage) via the SFP+ port. Then simply configure the adapter settings via the macOS Network Control Panel, Windows Device Manager or Linux command line (or graphical utility). 

By default, Sonnet includes a short-range multi-mode fibre SFP+ module (up to 300 metres) with the Solo10G SFP+ network adapter. However, a long-range single-mode fibre module (up to 10 kilometres), and a 10GBASE-T copper module (up to 30 metres using Cat 6A cables) are available separately. Alternatively, inexpensive Twinax direct-connect copper cables up to 10 metres in length (also sold separately) can also be used.

Solo10G SFP+ can be carried in your pocket - it measures just 8 cm wide by 12 cm deep and 3 cm high - and is bus-powered to enable truly portable use without the need for a power adapter. Featuring a robust aluminium casing, its cool operation means it is fanless, allowing for quiet and energy-efficient operation.

As a network device, the Sonnet Solo10G SFP+ is designed with essential security features. By incorporating hardware encryption, the Sonnet adapter is protected against malicious modification of its firmware. Any unauthorised attempt to modify the firmware to facilitate unauthorised access to the computer would render the adapter unusable. This secure design prevents the Solo10G adapter's firmware from being reprogrammed, except by a manufacturer's update using a secure encryption key.
