The new XEEN Anamorphic 50mm T2.3 Pro Cinema lens, the first anamorphic lens manufactured by Samyang, is an significant move for the manufacturer, offering a PL mount lens with premium details and robust construction, compatible with full-frame sensors and images up to 8K.
To counterbalance the weight of the lenses that make up an anamorphic lens, Samyang has manufactured part of the lens body tube in carbon fiber. This ultra-light and strong material is designed for durability, and gives the lens a remarkable weight below 4kg.
It has an outstanding aperture of T2.3 for an anamorphic lens. The 15 aperture blades, increased from the 13 of its previous range, in combination with its more open apertures, deliver an excellent oval-shaped, evenly illuminated bokeh effect. The resulting out-of-focus can be used to create dramatic images that are characteristic of cinema lenses.
It has a compression factor of 2X, which when decompressed covers an aspect ratio of 2.55:1 in Full Frame format. This aspect ratio corresponds to the original Cinemascope widescreen, which provides a wide field of view with a characteristic vintage cinematic style. This modern-day anamorphic lens is ideal for cinematographers who want warm, soft-looking images with realistic proportions.
As in its previous series, the front diameter is 114mm, easily adjustable with a 4x5 Matte Box.
To facilitate the work of the focus puller, a bi-directional scale with focus and iris markings has been installed on both sides of the lens for proper lens handling. For the same purpose, a special treatment has been applied to the numerical inscriptions to be visible in dark environments.
The wide 300° focus ring rotation range allows for smooth and very precise tracking of the subject.
Samyang is offering an anamorphic lens to compete with brands such as Zeiss or Cooke, with a vintage cinematic aesthetic, wide field of view and warm images, but with an updated design and premium quality finish.
