For podcasts, sound effects and music recording applications, the Tascam DR-40X portable recorder is capable of capturing up to four tracks of high-resolution audio without the need for external microphones. Its built-in unidirectional condenser microphones can be adjusted for wide or tight stereo imaging, and can be used simultaneously with the combo mic/line inputs. In addition, these unidirectional microphones minimize pickup of sound entering from the rear of the capsules, resulting in a more focused tone with less reflections. The DR-40X is equally suitable as a handheld device or when used in stand or camera-mounted configurations.

Its powering methods, batteries, USB power or an AC adapter, make the DR-40X well suited for on-the-fly recording, all-day video recording and computer audio production. The DR-40X's two balanced XLR-1/4" inputs support mic or line-level signals (even +4 dBu from professional consoles) and can supply switchable 24V or 48V phantom power if needed. Whether you use the built-in microphones or an external source, selectable modes such as stereo safety track recording, peak reduction, limiting and auto-level give you options for clean, distortion-free recording.

To maximize compactness and portability, the DR-40X records directly to SD, SDHC and SDXC cards (up to 128 GB capacity) that support long recording times, even at high audio resolutions.

The DR-40X features a 3.5 mm mini-jack output that you can connect to your camera's input to record on both the camera and the recorder. You can also connect a pair of headphones to the 3.5 mm mini-jack for critical listening. Quick monitoring checks can be performed through the DR-40X's built-in mono speaker. Using the three included AA alkaline batteries, you can power the DR-40X for up to 18 hours of stereo recording at 16-bit / 44.1 kHz resolution. For longer sessions requiring more recording time, the DR-40X can be powered via a USB connection to a computer or mobile battery, or via the Tascam PS-P520E AC adapter (available separately).
