Blackmagic 2110 IP products comply with the SMPTE ST-2110 standard for IP video, which specifies the transport, synchronisation and description of 10-bit video, audio and ancillary data over managed IP networks for broadcast. It can also resynchronise SDI inputs to a common PTP clock or external equipment can be locked to the reference output which is also generated from the PTP clock. Blackmagic 2110 IP products support SMPTE-2110-20 for uncompressed video, SMPTE-2110-21 for traffic shaping/timing, SMPTE-2110-30 for audio, and SMPTE-2110-40 for ancillary data. In addition, Blackmagic 2110 IP products support multicast, which is an efficient way to distribute video, audio and data from a single source to multiple destinations.
There is no longer a need for an IT technician to keep IP video systems up and running. The Blackmagic 2110 IP converters solve this problem because they can be connected point-to-point, or via a switch, as appropriate. This means you can deploy a professional SMPTE-2110 IP video system easily, achieving professional two-way video distribution almost automatically. It's just like an SDI workflow. You can connect cameras to rack converters and get all camera control, programme video and tally, with a single connection. Everything is set up automatically and just works.
Point-to-point connection
Thanks to its careful design, two Blackmagic 2110 IP devices can be connected point-to-point with a simple fibre connection. The point-to-point connection is automatically configured, so there is no need to enter any settings. It's a simple cable that plugs in. With point-to-point connections, you get the perfect solution for live events, as SMPT-2110 carries control data, audio, video and other metadata via multiple synchronised streams.
Connection via a network switch
If you are working with larger SMPTE-2110 systems, such as a broadcast installation, you can connect all your video equipment to a network switch. In this case, just connect everything to the switch and then set up the network. It works like a big video router, as all connections are made between the SMPTE-2110 devices. In addition, all Blackmagic 2110 IP products support the NMOS protocol, including IS-04, IS-05 and IS-06 standards for discovery, logging and stream management, as well as making it easy for all devices connected to a 2110 IP network to function as one large virtual switching matrix. It is more complex to configure, but it is totally flexible!
NMOS protocol for creating virtual switches
The support of these Blackmagic converters for the NMOS interface specifications allows all equipment connected to a 2110 IP network to function as one large virtual matrix. The Videohub Smart Control device provides the ability to map sources to destinations using this protocol, which describes how such equipment is detected and controlled on an IP network. Compliance with the IS-04 and IS-05 specifications facilitates the discovery and registration of AV devices on these networks and the management of their connection, respectively. In this way, it is possible to connect sources to destinations in the same way as via a traditional SDI switching matrix.
Professional 10 bit quality
Blackmagic 2110 IP converters support high quality images. In broadcast, 10-bit colour depth is generally used, as colours are represented four times more accurately than 8-bit signals. The captured images are a perfect copy of the original SDI source, pixel for pixel, without any loss of detail, resulting in the best possible quality. This not only prevents loss of detail, but also gives you the opportunity to achieve perfect green backgrounds and sharp titles, as well as better colour matching. The automatic re-sync function makes it easy to transmit a regenerated SDI signal, with very low jitter, to all devices in the studio.
