What are the features of the Sony E Mount?

The Sony E mount is a type of lens mounting developed by Sony for its range of NEX and ILCE hybrid video and still cameras. This mount is characterized by having a flange focal distance of 18 mm, which is the distance between the mount plane and the image sensor, and an internal diameter of 46.1 mm. These dimensions allow for the design of more compact and lighter lenses than those of other mounts, as well as easy adaptation of lenses from other systems using adapters.
 
Sony launched the first cameras with the E mount in 2010, the Sony NEX-3 and NEX-5, which featured a 14.2-megapixel APS-C sensor. Since then, Sony has expanded its camera offerings with this mount, including models with a full-frame sensor (35mm) such as the Sony α7, α7R, and α7S, which offer higher image quality and better low-light performance. Furthermore, Sony published the specifications of its mount in 2011, allowing other manufacturers like Sigma, Tamron, or Zeiss to develop compatible lenses.
 
E-mount lenses are classified according to the size of the sensor they are designed for: FE lenses are for full-frame sensors, while E lenses are for APS-C sensors. However, FE lenses can be used on cameras with an APS-C sensor, albeit with a 1.5x crop factor that reduces the angle of view. Conversely, E lenses are not recommended for cameras with a full-frame sensor, as they may produce vignetting or loss of sharpness at the edges.
 
The range of E-mount lenses is highly varied, covering everything from wide-angle to telephoto lenses, including standard, macro, and portrait lenses.
