Dante audio protocol, developed by Audinate in 2006, represents a significant innovation in multi-channel digital audio transmission over Ethernet networks. Dante, which stands for Digital Audio Network Through Ethernet, enables the handling of uncompressed, low-latency digital audio using standard Layer 3 IP packets. The protocol is capable of supporting up to 512 input and output channels at 24-bit resolution and 48kHz sample rate on 1GB networks, with the ability to increase the sample rate to 192kHz and resolution to 32-bit on upgraded networks.
 
One of the key benefits of Dante is its ability to simplify complex interconnects in professional audio environments. Traditionally, multiple long and heavy analogue cables were required to connect devices such as microphones, mixers and speakers. Dante eliminates the need for these cables by allowing audio to be transmitted over a single Ethernet cable, making it easy to manage and route audio in software. This not only reduces the clutter and costs associated with analogue cabling, but also improves sound quality by eliminating the noise and hum associated with analogue connections.
 
Dante also supports control data, allowing audio and control signals to be integrated on the same network, optimising system efficiency and flexibility. In addition, the protocol is based on the IEEE 1588 standard for Precision Time Protocol (PTP), ensuring accurate synchronisation between devices on the network.
 
Interoperability is another key aspect of Dante, allowing devices from different manufacturers to communicate as long as they support the protocol. This facilitates the configuration of complex audio systems and their future expansion, as new devices can be easily added to the existing network.
