The four improved Scarlett mic preamps are equally capable of picking up vocals and instruments and feature switchable phantom power for condenser microphones, pads to prevent distortion from strong input signals, and a selectable Air circuit per channel, which adds a clarity-enhancing glow based on Focusrite's legendary ISA preamp.

The first two XLR-1/4" combo inputs are software switchable to accept the signal directly from electric instruments such as guitar and bass, or from line-level sources such as the stereo mixer outputs, while combo inputs 3-4 can handle signal from mic or line sources. The rear panel features four additional 1/4" fixed-level inputs to accommodate more line-level sources, such as the pre-amplifier outputs. external microphone.

The 24-bit / 192 kHz AD / DA converters, which allow recording in standard CD quality or at high-fidelity resolutions, ensure that signals are captured and reproduced with detail and precision. The Scarlett 18i8's virtual loopback feature allows podcasters a simple mix-minus setup to take calls without the other party being distracted by a delayed audio loopback signal. Additionally, traditional 5-pin MIDI I/O is provided for seamless integration of MIDI equipment such as a keyboard or sound module. There are also S/PDIF stereo digital I/O jacks, in case you need to connect external AD / DA converters or other digital gear. Connect an external A / D converter to the ADAT optical input to record up to eight more channels of audio. You can even use your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch to wirelessly control the Scarlett 18i8.
