Blackmagic Design Cloud Store (80TB) - 80TB Network Storage

Blackmagic Design Cloud Store (80TB) - 80TB Network Storage

BMD-DWCLDI/CLD080

The Blackmagic Design Cloud Store 80TB is a network storage device for large media files. Its flash memory allows for simultaneous use by multiple users. Thanks to the ability to sync with Dropbox, storage can be distributed across multiple units globally, for faster access to material, even over slow Internet connections. It includes an HDMI status output for real-time status display, offering superior performance over conventional storage systems.

The Blackmagic Cloud Store is available in 20TB, 80TB and 320TB versions, enough to store all files in one network location. The M.2 memory cards are very reliable and fast, and are arranged in RAID5, so they work much faster, ensuring outstanding speed and high fault tolerance.

The Blackmagic Design Cloud Store is the optimal solution for network media storage, especially in the film and television industry where large files need to be shared among multiple users for editing, colour grading, audio mixing and visual effects. The device is capable of processing material recorded in Blackmagic RAW format, at 12K resolution, without latency, eliminating the need to store it locally on the computer. As such, it is ideal when working with DaVinci Resolve. Dropbox support makes it easy to sync between disks anywhere in the world, so you can edit from any location with exceptional speed. This is critical when processing content recorded with multiple cameras, when multiple files are playing simultaneously.

Portable design and quiet operation

Unlike other computer storage media that are installed in racks and are extremely noisy, the Blackmagic Cloud Store model features a portable, vertical design. Thanks to its quiet operation, it can be used during on-location shoots and productions. It has an array of flash memory running in parallel for speed and data protection. Two redundant power supplies are included. The four 10G Ethernet ports allow computer equipment to be connected or used together to achieve an extraordinary 40Gb/s speed. This model also has an HDMI status output, which allows you to connect monitors or TVs to view a real-time graph of the storage process. It can also be easily serviced.

Simultaneous users

The Blackmagic Cloud Store is available in 20, 80 and 320TB versions, providing a huge amount of space for all types of media. This is enough to store all files in one location on the network. The M.2 memory cards are extremely reliable and offer high speed. In addition, they are arranged in a RAID5 system in parallel, so they work much faster than individually. This guarantees outstanding speed and exceptional fault tolerance. If a memory failure is detected, the device automatically switches to read mode, so that files can still be accessed.

Digital film files

The device is extremely fast thanks to the 10G Ethernet connections. Its internal memory core has been designed to take full advantage of the speed of these four ports simultaneously. This allows it to outperform many computers, offering very low latency and exceptional responsiveness, thanks to parallel processing. Even when running at full speed, the device is extremely quiet, even when editing RAW files at 12K resolution. This in turn facilitates the processing of multi-camera footage.

Synchronisation with Dropbox

It is now possible to create a local backup of content stored in Dropbox. This speeds up work, as the files are available instantly, without the need to download them from the Internet. The device is constantly synchronised and allows you to save these files in order to share them over the network and save space on your computer. It also provides the opportunity to synchronise multiple drives via Dropbox, so that different users in different geographic regions can collaborate without latency. The platform also facilitates the creation of backups.

Global file distribution

Dropbox support allows multiple Blackmagic Cloud Store units to be used for file sharing. This is extremely important when working with complex datasets or high quality digital film material, as these files need to be accessed constantly, even dozens of times per second, and most internet connections are too slow for this. However, despite the latency, they are suitable for synchronisation. By having a local copy of the files, all users on the network can access them without delay. In addition, the device will continue to synchronise them continuously, even when the computer is switched off.

Real-time control

HDMI output makes it easy to connect monitors or TVs to view storage information. This includes a memory map that provides the opportunity to see in real time the reading and writing of files by connected users. In addition, graphical representations of data transfers over Ethernet connections are displayed. A space indicator allows you to check the memory capacity and usage. The device name can be changed and the status of the Dropbox connection, power supplies and connected users can be displayed.

Redundant design for critical applications

The Blackmagic Cloud Store model stores files on a RAID5 system of M.2 memory, ensuring data protection. Although these cards are highly reliable, the system allows every sixth drive to be used to store parity information. This drive contains error correction data that can be used to rebuild files after replacing a card. In addition, the device uses each memory equally, in order to avoid overuse of a particular one, and thanks to its two power supplies, it continues to operate in the event of a failure in one of them. All components of this model are readily available, making it very easy to repair.

10G Ethernet connection

This device includes four high-speed 10G Ethernet ports, which are only found on high-end computer equipment. These connections are 10 times faster than an ordinary Ethernet network and are fully utilised for the purpose of extraordinary speed, even when they are all operating simultaneously. They can connect multiple computers or achieve speeds of 40Gb/s when used together. Moreover, their latency is extremely low, and the two additional 1G Ethernet ports provide the opportunity to leave the 10G connections free for other purposes.

USB-C local access

Most modern laptops are so thin that they do not have an Ethernet connection. Consequently, an adapter is needed to connect them to such networks. These adapters are cumbersome and make it difficult to connect the computer to the storage unit in order to access its contents. The Blackmagic Cloud Store comes with a built-in adapter that allows you to connect your computer directly to the USB-C port. This provides the ability to use an Ethernet network for easy access to files. Simply plug in your computer and instantly retrieve the files you need.

Repairable design, increased durability

Although the Blackmagic Cloud Store does not feature a modular design, it can be easily repaired by any technician. Printed circuit boards and power supplies are attached to a central frame, so they are easy to remove and replace. The memory is made up of M.2 cards represented by an LED that allows the damaged unit to be identified and replaced. In addition, the device uses each memory equally, in order to avoid overuse of a particular one. It is possible to check any failure by means of the monitor connected to the unit or the utility program. The latter also provides the possibility to rebuild the memory when a damaged card is replaced.

No subscription fees

One of the great advantages of the Blackmagic Cloud Store model is that the user is in complete control of the storage. There is no subscription or monthly licence fee, and there is no tracking of usage or information. You don't even need to log into a website to change the drive's settings, as this is done through a free utility program that is compatible with Mac and Windows computers. This makes it possible to create a private network without any external connection, which is essential to comply with certain security policies that prohibit connecting computer networks to the Internet. This model offers exceptional performance and portability with complete freedom.

Management software for free

This program allows you to change the configuration of the device. By default, the drive uses the DHCP protocol, so you can connect it to a network and start transferring files. It is very similar to the way a common hard disk is connected, which makes it easy to use without the need to consult a computer expert. However, the utility also provides the possibility to modify network settings and add synchronisation folders in Dropbox. When replacing M.2 memory cards, the software can also be used to rebuild the memory core.

Multi-camera productions

Multi-camera productions can now be revolutionised by recording signals to the storage device using HyperDeck Extreme drives. Each recorder records footage from a specific camera, which is ideal when editing multiple angles with DaVinci Resolve. The software is free of charge and allows you to add as many users as you need. HyperDeck Extreme units allow you to save files in ProRes, H.265 or DNx format to the Blackmagic Cloud Store model thanks to the high speed 10G Ethernet connection. It is even possible to install an M.2 cache on the recorders to facilitate simultaneous editing by multiple users on a network.
