Blackmagic Cloud Pod - Network Storage System

Blackmagic Cloud Pod - Network Storage System

BMD-DWCLDA/POD

The Blackmagic Design Cloud Pod is a storage management device, designed for sharing media files over a network. It has 2 USB-C connections that allow you to connect external drives (not included) of any capacity, and share their files by using the 10G Ethernet connection. The Cloud Pod is able to sync with Dropbox, keeping files constantly updated and available without taking up space on your computer. It is also possible to synchronise several of these units with Dropbox, making content available anywhere in the world.

The high-speed 10G Ethernet connection allows multiple users to access their files simultaneously. Latency is extremely low and performance is similar to a SAN. It offers an HDMI output for the status monitor.

The Blackmagic Cloud Pod is an ideal device for sharing footage recorded by a camera on disk with multiple users over a network. It has a 10G Ethernet connection that allows files to be accessed with exceptional speed, even by multiple users simultaneously. Thanks to synchronisation with Dropbox, storage can be distributed across multiple units globally to speed up access to footage, even over slower internet connections. It's so easy to use that you don't need to consult an IT technician to set it up, and it has an HDMI output that allows you to connect monitors. This device is the ideal solution for sharing files over networks.

Designed for film and television

The Blackmagic Cloud Pod will transform your workflow. It is ideal for film and television, allowing you to record to USB drives and then share the content on those drives across a network with multiple editors and colourists. Depending on the drive model used, it is capable of processing digital film files in Blackmagic RAW format at 12K resolution. USB-C drives are very inexpensive and fast, and are available at any office supply shop. Synchronisation with Dropbox gives you the ability to place multiple devices in different locations for a local copy of your files and to edit from each location with exceptional speed.

Portable design and quiet operation

This device has an extremely compact and slim design, as it does not have an internal storage unit. It is also very quiet and portable. It has two USB-C ports for connecting two drives simultaneously, and the 10G Ethernet connection gives it unparalleled speed. This model also has an HDMI output that provides the ability to connect monitors or TVs to view a graph of the storage process in real time. On the front, there is an indicator light that shows disk activity. A DC power connection provides the option of powering it from the included power supply or a battery when used outdoors.

Synchronisation with Dropbox

It is now possible to create a local backup of the content stored in Dropbox. This speeds up work, as files are available instantly, without the need to download them from the Internet. The device is constantly synchronised and allows you to save these files in order to share them over the network and save space on your computer. It also provides the opportunity to synchronise multiple drives via Dropbox, so that different users in different geographic regions can collaborate without latency. This makes it an ideal solution for home or outdoor use.

Global file distribution

Dropbox support allows multiple Blackmagic Cloud Pod units to be used for file sharing. This is important when working with complex datasets or high quality digital film material, as these files need to be accessed constantly, even dozens of times per second, and most internet connections are too slow for this. However, despite the latency, they are suitable for synchronisation. By having a local copy of the files, all users on the network can access them without delay. In addition, the device will continue to synchronise them continuously, even when the computer is switched off.

Real-time control

HDMI output makes it easy to connect monitors or TVs to view storage information. This includes a memory map that provides the opportunity to see in real time the reading and writing of files by connected users. In addition, graphical representations of data transfers over Ethernet connections are displayed. The space indicator allows you to check the capacity of the USB-C memory sticks and their usage. The device name can be changed and the status of the Dropbox connection, power supplies and connected users can be displayed.

High-speed 10G Ethernet connection

This device includes a high-speed 10G Ethernet port that is only found on high-end computing equipment. Such connections are 10 times faster than a common Ethernet network and are fully utilised for the purpose of allowing dozens of users to access files simultaneously. Moreover, their latency is extremely low, and their performance is similar to that of SANs, but with a cost-effective design and easy installation.

No subscription fees

One of the great benefits of the Blackmagic Cloud Pod device is that the user is in complete control of the storage. There is no subscription or monthly licence fee, and there is no tracking of usage or data. You don't even need to log into a website to change the unit's settings, as this is done through a free utility program that is compatible with Mac and Windows computers. This makes it possible to create a private network without any external connection, which is essential to comply with certain security policies that prohibit connecting computer networks to the Internet. Blackmagic Cloud Pod makes it easy to freely customise network storage solutions.

Free software for Mac and Windows

This software allows you to change the configuration of the device. By default, the unit uses the DHCP protocol, so you can connect it to a network and start transferring files. It is very similar to the way a regular hard drive is connected, which makes it easy to use without the need to consult a computer expert. However, the utility also offers the possibility to change network settings and add synchronisation folders in Dropbox.

Multi-camera workflow

Professional-quality workflows are possible by connecting USB-C disks recorded on the camera to the corresponding port on the device. This gives you instant access to your content, without the need to copy files, using DaVinci Resolve computers. DaVinci Resolve is a free program that makes it easy to edit and colour grade footage shot with the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera, for example, which can record directly to such drives. The camera's sensor offers a dual ISO sensitivity of 25,600 for cinema-quality images, even in moonlight. This is ideal when making independent productions or editing content recorded with multiple cameras.
