Blackmagic Design ATEM Constellation 8K is a powerful video mixer in a 2RU chassis that can handle HD, 4K and supports 8K video. It features an integrated control panel on the front and 40x 12G-SDI inputs, with two main and 24 AUX 12G-SDI outputs. Each input has its own scaler, allowing seamless switching between inputs, regardless of format. The Constellation 8K incorporates 4x DVE, 16x Keyers and 4x media players. The four multiviewer outputs allow 4, 7, 10, 10, 13 or 16 simultaneous images to be viewed.
The front LCD display screen shows the input video. Constellation 8K can be controlled locally, via the front panel buttons, or from a computer using the control panel software. The built-in Fairlight audio mixer supports 80 channels of audio from SDI, plus 64 channels from the MADI input.

It includes 4 M/E banks, 40 12G SDI inputs, 24 auxiliary 12G SDI outputs, 4 channels for visual effects, 16 composers for chrominance overlays, 4 media players, 4 separate windows for simultaneous viewing of UHD images, 2 SuperSource processors, and format conversion on all inputs. Operating in 8K mode, the combination of these features makes it possible to transmit content with unprecedented resolution. It also offers a Fairlight communication system and 156 audio channels with equalizer and dynamic processors for professional sound mixing, and it's even possible to connect a Fairlight console to it.
With its large number of inputs, the ATEM Constellation is ideal for concerts and music festivals, allowing cameras to be located at different points on stage for the best coverage. Even during live sporting events, the variety of connections together with the four visual effects channels make it easy to create compositions in multiple layers for the purpose of showing every detail of the action. Live broadcasts are the fastest way to produce programs. In this sense, internal graphics and four advanced composers for chrominance overlays offer everything you need for a complex production.
Due to the wide variety of features, the ATEM Constellation can be used in HD or UHD as well as 8K. In the latter case, the 40 independent 12G SDI inputs function as 10 four-link 12G SDI inputs to transmit 8K images. In turn, each input offers the ability to convert formats, allowing you to switch between 720p, 1080p, 1080i, UHD and 8K signals. In addition, the device offers four independent windows for simultaneous viewing in UHD that can be combined to display content in 8K resolution. Even composers, SuperSource, and digital visual effects channels are capable of processing material in this definition.
The ATEM Constellation 8K features a compact 2U modular design with an integrated control panel. It provides the ability to operate the device, which is critical during the preparation stage or in emergency situations. It also includes a large LCD screen that allows you to view the main output and change different settings through the menus. Although the mixer occupies only two rack units, the rear has 40 SDI 12G inputs, 24 auxiliary SDI 12G outputs and connections for balanced audio signals, MADI digital audio and Ethernet networks, as well as an RS-422 control port.
All mixers in the ATEM line support a wide variety of control options and allow panels to be shared between different models for different types of live events. In this sense, the ATEM Constellation 8K model includes a complete control program for Mac and Windows. This communicates with the equipment through an Ethernet network and offers the possibility to manage it, upload files, mix audio and control the cameras. It can even run on multiple terminals simultaneously. For more complex projects, we recommend connecting ATEM Camera Control Panel or ATEM Advanced Panel devices, in order to operate the cameras more accurately or switch between different signals, respectively. In addition, development tools make it easy to create custom solutions.
Simultaneous viewing allows multiple sources to be monitored on a single monitor. Specifically, the four independent outputs for this function can be customized or combined to view images in 8K resolution. It should also be noted that all external signals and internal sources can be assigned to any of the four outputs and, in turn, it is possible to configure this feature to view 4, 7, 10, 13 or 16 images simultaneously. Each window includes labels, volume meters and indicators. In addition, the four simultaneous display outputs support HD and UHD signals at a maximum resolution of 2160p60, and up to 4320p60 in 8K mode via four 12G SDI links.
The ATEM Constellation 8K model includes a wide range of 8K-quality professional transitions, such as dissolvent, fade, and curtain. It is possible to adjust its duration, position and direction, as well as the color and width of the edge. The original resolution of these transitions is 8K. In addition, the device offers excellent visual effects for graphics bumpers and even animated transitions when using media players. Moreover, in order to avoid errors, this model offers the possibility to see a preview of the transition in order to check it before broadcasting it to the air.
The ATEM Constellation 8K model includes 4 UHD channels for visual effects that are combined when operating in 8K mode. This makes it possible to achieve amazing quality and change the position and size of compositions in real time to create professional effects with simultaneous images (PIP), parallel shadows and adaptive 3D edges. On the other hand, these effects can be used in animated transitions that make transmissions more dynamic. In addition, the mixer makes it easy to combine these transitions with graphical elements to create custom bumpers.
The ATEM Constellation 8K model includes a communication system that facilitates coordination between the different members of the production. The device has a 5-pin headphone connection on the front panel, as well as an RJ45 on the rear for common systems such as ClearCom and RTS. In addition, it has channels to communicate with engineers and other team members, and allows you to control the local effect to hear your own voice, as well as mix the audio of the program. On the other hand, this model offers the possibility of establishing communication with Blackmagic Design cameras through SDI channels 15 and 16, and with engineers through channels 13 and 14. It is even possible to mix the audio of the communication with that of the program, in order to make live comments.
The mixer allows to store animations and graphics of great quality in RGBA format to reproduce them to the instant. Specifically, the media players function as additional sources on the ATEM Constellation 8K model, so there is no need to use other SDI inputs. The equipment has a capacity for 24 still images in 8K resolution, or 64 in UHD or HD definition. On the other hand, graphic animations used in transitions can have a duration of up to 100 RGBA frames in 8K, 400 in UHD or 1600 in HD 1080. The ATEM Software Control program, included with the mixer, makes it easy to organize multimedia files, but it is also possible to import them directly from Photoshop using the ATEM Photoshop plug-in.
The ATEM Constellation 8K is ideal for newsletters or virtual scenarios, with 16 advanced composers for luminance and chrominance overlays. In the case of the latter, the color selector allows a sample to be taken from the background for the purpose of automatically generating the mask parameters. In addition, controls for edges and reflections are included, as well as a chromatic corrector for the foreground image, so that its appearance coincides with that of the background, thus achieving a perfect composition. On the other hand, the composer can be used in masks with geometric shapes and digital visual effects, providing unparalleled versatility. It should be noted that when operating in 8K mode, the mixer offers four independent channels for compositions in 8K resolution.
The 40 12G SDI inputs support multiple bitrates, providing compatibility with HD, UHD and 8K sources. The formats available in HD are 720p60, 1080p60, and 1080i59.94, while in UHD it is possible to transmit images with 2160p resolution at up to 60 f/s via a single 12G SDI connection. Operating in 8K mode, the device supports signals in 4320p format at up to 60 f/s over four 12G SDI links, allowing 8K content to be transmitted in real time over four BNC cables. Only this type of SDI connectivity offers the ability to alternate between formats in different definitions, thus offering absolute flexibility for all types of projects.
The ATEM Constellation 8K is the first mixer on the market that allows professional audio processing. It offers Fairlight audio tools including a 6-band parametric equalizer with compressor, limiter, noise gate and expander for each input. It also has a MADI connection that supports 32 additional channels. It's even possible to connect this model to a Fairlight professional console. It also has 2 MADI outputs to separate channels 1, 2, 3 and 4 from the first 30 SDI inputs for transmission to external equipment. Analog sources or microphone audio can also be mixed for commentary and narration.
Thanks to the Fairlight tools, the ATEM Constellation 8K model allows complex audio mixing. The device has 156 channels for this purpose, an unprecedented number in this type of mixers, of which 80 come from the SDI inputs, and the remaining 64 from the MADI connection. Each includes a 6-band parametric equalizer with compressor, limiter, expander, noise gate and audio distribution. Analog sources, microphones and media players can also be used. It is important to note that all these functions can be accessed through the ATEM Software Control program, a Fairlight console or a compatible Mackie control panel.
The ATEM Constellation 8K includes an innovative cooling system that allows a compact design of only 2 rack units to be maintained for greater portability. With three fans, they can run at a lower speed, which in turn reduces wear and noise. In addition, the internal heat sinks are designed to direct airflow to the components and reduce turbulence in order to facilitate silent operation. In turn, the ducts and dissipaters have been specifically developed for this model, taking into account its dimensions.
The ATEM Constellation 8K has a redundant power supply system, since, although it includes two power supplies, it only needs one of them to work. In turn, these have independent connectors for alternating current on the rear panel, so it is possible to power the device from two different sources. If one of them fails, there will be no interruption in the power supply. This is very useful, as it offers the possibility of using different phase currents, a generator or an uninterruptible power supply system. It should be noted that the power supplies support voltages from 100 to 240 V, so the mixer can be used in different countries without any problems.
The ATEM Software Control program offers the possibility to control the cameras connected to the mixer. The Blackmagic URSA Broadcast and Blackmagic Studio Camera models can be controlled via the SDI connection, thus allowing parameters to be modified and chromatic adjustments to be made remotely from the virtual control panel. The application offers two different display modes. The first resembles a traditional camera control unit (CCU), while the second is similar to DaVinci Resolve's primary correction interface and allows you to adjust color or achieve greater creativity.
